Industry

This section deals with the activities of the industries that support the productive and sustainable use of the Murray-Darling Basin.

Agriculture is the dominant economic activity in the Murray-Darling Basin and the Basin is Australia’s most important agricultural region, accounting for just over 41% of the nation’s gross value of agricultural production (Murray-Darling Basin Resources 1997).

The Basin supports a variety of agricultural activities such as Crop production this includes wheat, barley and rice, Horticultural crops this include citrus and grapes and Livestock production that includes sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry.

Other industries operating in the Basin are forestry, mining, tourism and fisheries.

The bulk of this industry is supported by the water management of the river murray water under the auspices of the Murray Darling Basin authority.
