Fisheries

There are several species of fish that are commercial fished in the Murray-Darling Basin these include Murray cod, golden perch, freshwater catfish, carp, and bony bream. The Murray-Darling Basin is the only area in Australia where commercial freshwater fishing is undertaken. The main areas for fishing are the Coorong, Lake Alexandria and Albert, Lake Victoria, the Lower Darling, the Murray and Murrumbidgee, and the Edward and Wakool rivers. The Golden perch (callop) and the Murray Cod are the two most important fish for human consumption. The commercial fishing industry however is declining in part due to the reduction in the number of fish.

The fishing industry has also turned its focus to aquaculture of fish farming in the Basin. The types of fish being farmed are rainbow trout, Murray Cod, golden perch, brook trout and catfish. Yabbies are also caught commercial and farm in the Basin.
